Mono (Japan) Nowhere Now Here tour

When I lived in Hong Kong I was lucky to meet Gary Ieong of Whitenoiserecords who introduced me to the wonderful world of Japanese indie bands and Mono was one my favourites.So when I moved to Italy and Mono were playing a live show in Bologna I had to attend.I arrived late at the venue and it was already packed so could only record video from the back of the hall.

The show at Bologna was part of  a massive world tour including Japan,China,Europe,UK and USA.

The set included music from Hymn to the Immortal Wind ,their 2009 classic as well as the latest release Nowhere Now Here.

 20 years ago Slowdive were part. of a group of  UK bands including The Cocteau Twins,My Bloody Valentine,Ride and others,loosely described as shoegaze because of their aethereal vocals,dreamy sound,fuzzy,guitar with lots of reverb.They were less publicised  at the time in the frenzy for the harder- hitting sounds of grunge and  the popularity of Britpop bands like Blur and Oasis,

Although neglected at the time,we can now see shoegaze and  dream pop influence on a whole host of modern  bands including M83,Asobi Seksu,Broadcast and in the rise of labels like 'Sonic Cathedral'. As well as this,the music was also highly influential on post rock and ambient.

 The band members are Neil Halstead,(vocals,guitar),Rachel Goswell(vocals,guitar),Christian Savill(guitar),Nick Chaplin(bass) and Simon Scott(drums).Many of the songs played on this tour like'Machine Gun','When the Sun Hits','Dagger',were  taken from their most influential album 'Souvlaki'  as was '40 Days',which seems to be a personal favourite of Neil's.The songs are lovingly recreated in their live sets,complete with swirling guitars and beautiful harmonies from Neil and Rachel.Before the show I was chatting to a bunch of teenagers and I was amazed by how passionate they were about this band.Shoegaze lives on!

GYBE came to our city bearing bad news in the form of doomy,hypnotic postrock anthems but they were greeted rapturously by the select band of devotees of postrock gathered in The Vine.
HK is becoming seriously cool when we can attract bands of this calibre to venues like The Vine instead of soulless arenas like Asiaworld.I can even forgive the band/the organisers for the agonizingly long wait which preceded the set!
Throughout the 2 hour set there were moments of stillness and delicate beauty in familiar favourite tracks like 'Gathering Storm' balancing the heavy postrock crescendos of newer material like 'Mladic'and fans were mesmerised.No chatting with the fans or polite exchanges.Just serious postrock.
